Mahalo

Today’s ʻOlelo Hawaiʻi word is Mahalo! Along with aloha, mahalo is the most common ‘Olelo Hawai’i word you will hear on the islands. It means thank you. It is often modified with the words nui and/or loa which both convey the idea of big or large. Sometimes we will say to each other Mahalo Nui or Mahalo Nui Loa! Literally, thanks a lot or thank you big much! Whenever I think of this kind of thankfulness, King David instantly springs to my mind.

Today’s Scripture

Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name. ~ Psalm 100:4

A Heart of Thanksgiving

David was known as a man after God’s own heart. Despite frequent lapses of moral character at times, David always eventually came to his senses and threw himself on God’s mercy. God always forgave David and gave him another chance and David was always ecstatic with thanksgiving when that happened. Many of the Psalms written by David show this spirit of thanksgiving that was ever-present in him.

Practicing a Spirit of Mahalo

Whenever our American Thanksgiving draws near, our thoughts turn toward giving God the mahalo He regularly deserves, but so rarely receives from us. Instead of waiting for a special occasion to stop and give God thanks, why not pause for a moment today, right now? Before you do anything else today, even before you log out of this blog, stop and give God mahalo for all the blessings you have in your life. He certainly deserves a Mahalo Nui Loa from all of us every single day. Don’t you agree?
